Project Information

IS18/22 MUN Iberia NL plate reconstruction project
Project Description:  The margins of the southern North Atlantic Ocean host many of the world’s most promising frontier regions for oil and gas exploration, with the Newfoundland and Labrador margins showing the most promise and success to date. Prior to rifting and opening of the ocean, the Newfoundland margins lay conjugate to the Iberian margin to the southeast and the Irish Atlantic margin to the northeast. The Newfoundland-Iberia conjugate margin pair arguably represents the most thoroughly studied magma-poor/non-volcanic pair in the world and the findings on those margins have been extrapolated to similar margins worldwide, despite the fact that many fundamental scientific questions remain about rifting asymmetry and that discrepancies and overlaps continue to result from competing plate reconstructions using rigid plates.

NAPSA website project
The NAPSA Website Project is jointly funded by the Irish Shelf Petroleum Studies Group (ISPSG) and Nalcor Energy (on behalf of the Offshore Geoscience Data Program with the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador).

The site and content management system (CMS) has been developed by Solomon Solutions of Dublin, Ireland.  The content is agreed by the ISPSG and Nalcor Energy and is being uploaded by the PIP Secretariat (www.pip.ie) in their behalf.  The site came online in October 2011 and is regularly updated.  The website was updated in January 2019 to a responsive design with improved security and admin.
